Met Africa Beads Backpack
A beaded headdress, or mpaan, crafted in the Kuba kingdom (present-day Democratic Republic of Congo) during the 19th–20th century, informs the detailing on this artful backpack with Sprayground’s shark mouth integrated into the design. Such a headdress, worn during funerals and ceremonial occasions, would have been a visible indication of one’s rank within the elaborate Kuba social system. The mpaan was specifically reserved for senior female titleholders. This backpack has been delicately crafted with beads and shells in honor of the original.
